The world is still in mourning the sudden and tragic passing of musician George Michael. The pop singer and philanthropist passed away in his home on December 25, leaving millions of grieving fans behind, and inspiring an outpouring of love and admiration for the singer on TV, radio and social media.

One of George’s most famous fans is James Corden. With last night’s return of new episodes of The Late Late Show With James Corden, the late night host and fellow Brit was finally able to deliver his monologue about what Michael’s music meant to him.

Speaking directly to camera, an emotional Corden said, “I feel like I’ve loved George Michael as long as I’ve loved music.” Corden went on to say, “I can remember so many specific times in my life where I might have felt on my own and George’s music would feel like you would listen to a song and he would reach his hand out and tell you that you weren’t on your own.”

Since George Michael’s passing, his impact on Corden’s series has been discussed in the media, with the first ever segment of Carpool Karaoke taking place in 2011 before Corden was a late night host. During last night’s episode, Corden was finally able to tell the story from his perspective, explaining how he managed to get George Michael to agree to the skit and what that meant when Corden started his own show in the US.

Check out the clip below to see who agreed to be the first guest on Carpool Karaoke because “if it’s good enough for George Michael, it’s good enough for me.”
